Sumi-e ink painting originated in East Asia and was practiced by both Chinese and Japanese cultures as calligraphy and fine art painting. Buddhist Monks practiced this form of calligraphy as a form of concentration and meditation.
Sumi-e practice is also about capturing the spirit and essence of the subject with minimal, expressive brush strokes. We will begin with black Sumi-e ink and create monochromatic variations in shades of gray, determined by the concentration of the ink to water. It is the values of light to dark that create the illusion of form.
In class we will practice how to draw with a brush and achieve the control of thick and thin strokes to draw each subject. The projects are inspired by the natural world and will include landscapes, seascapes, flowers, fish and birds.
Your Sumi-e art will be painted on rice papers and you will choose one of your paintings to construct a luminaria candle holder.
